free-to-play

A variant of game sharing, most often combined with a business model based on a microtransaction system. Productions distributed on a free-to-play basis can be played for free, which, however, is often associated with certain restrictions.

The popularity of F2P games is due to their “free” nature. The creators provide the files necessary for installation completely free of charge, and they do not require subscriptions. However, players must take into account that some virtual items and facilities will be offered for a fee, and advertisements may appear during the game.

F2P games like Aion are available for free, but some items and amenities require payment.

Free-to-play games are primarily made available of MMO and browser games. Due to the potential financial benefits of the microtransaction system, as well as the zero scale of piracy, more and more publishers are trying to apply this solution also in other types of productions.
